Plans to share commissioner housing responsibilities in the West have moved a step forward. This was announced in the following press release.

In his budget speech, Treasury Minister Eddie Teare confirmed funding for the preliminary design work on the new sewerage scheme for Peel.

This is great news after many have been working for a long time to see this vital facility become a reality.

Hotel Solutions has issued its report into the future for the Isle of Man’s hotel sector.

The report provides a useful insight in this area and makes a number of recommendations.

Among the findings, there is support for a boutique hotel in Peel. More information can be found below.

Tynwald last week unanimously supported the motion:

“That Tynwald welcomes moves to form a Manx Credit Union and calls upon the Treasury to introduce any necessary primary and secondary legislation by July 2017”

There is now real momentum in the drive to see a Manx Credit Union established on the Isle of Man. A pathway forward has been agreed with the Island’s regulator.

Manx Utilities have confirmed an environmental report and traffic assessment have been commissioned for the sewage treatment plant for Peel. They expect to complete these studies shortly. Manx Utilities have also confirmed their commitment to finishing the sewage works in 2019.

Peel is in line for a new healthcare ‘hub’ to serve its growing population. This was outlined at the recent DHSC West Roadshow at the QEII school. More information can be found on the link below:

On the 2nd February, the Consumer Act passed its third reading in the House of Keys.

Once the legislation completes its passage, this will outlaw cold calling in the Isle of Man and all contracts made this way will be null and void.

Monday 7 December – Public Services Commission meeting where I am now Vice Chair, DHSC political meeting, a tour of Ramsey Hospital, Child services core management meeting, Peel Clothworkers Christmas fair in the evening. 

Throughout the week there have been ongoing costituency matters, such as roads, impact of floods and other matters. 

Tuesday 8 December  House of Keys, evening event with the Kenyan parliamentary delegation.

Wednesday 9 December meeting with Crossroads Care, a tour of the children’s care homes and secure unit and a Tynwald briefing on the changes to the cabinet office.

Thursday 10 December  an excellent Bio-medical conference and ports meeting. Initial discussions on Isle of Man joining UEFA. Peel Heritage Trust Meeting in the evening.

Friday 11 December Peel Regeneration meeting, International Development Committee meeting, Noble’s Carol service, in the evening an brilliant performance by the Peel Pantaloons.

Saturday 12 December Peel surgery and bag packing @ Shoprite for Western Live At Home.

Sunday 13 December  a beautiful Carol service @ Cathedral and super Santas Grotto at the Sailors Shelter which has been recently renovated.

This week is the next stage of plans for Peel Regeneration and the sea services working committee. Tynwald is most of this week, more ports and DOI meetings and a Tynwald briefing on rates and state pension. There is a committee meeting on first time buyers and a meeting with FSA to discuss setting up credit unions in the Isle of Man.

Turning now to the comments of the Hon. Member for Peel, I can understand his concerns that the sewerage infrastructure for Peel has not been replaced to bring it up to modern standards. I would like to reassure him that Treasury intends to make capital provision in the forthcoming Budget for the design fees associated with this work. There was a modest provision made in the current year’s capital budget for 2016-17. I will be recommending that the sum of £1.25 million will be included. Assuming that there are no unexpected delays with the acquisition of the site, the planning process and an environmental impact survey, I would anticipate the construction works will begin in the 2018-19 financial year. But, as always, this will be subject to the approval of this Hon. Court.
